Our cabins are located just 15 minutes outside Soldotna on Funny River Road, and just 1/4 mile from the famous Kenai River. From Soldotna your drive is one of the most beautiful you will see in Alaska.
Views of amazing volcanos, wildlife, and beautiful Alaskan forest await you.
In the short, winding 16 mile drive along Funny River Road to Big Bear Cabin you will pass a 6-mile stretch of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. On any given day,Moose can be seen foraging along side the road, especially during winter months. Forest birds such as pine grosbeaks and thrushes zip between perches. A trip to the Funny River State Recreation Site and Campground offers access to a boardwalk at the confluence of Kenai and Funny rivers with easy viewing of shorebirds, terns, bald eagles and salmon. In the summer months of June, July and August, fisherman line the Kenai in this area fishing for a trophy Alaskan Salmon.
Locals, and mushroom enthusiasts from as far as Anchorage, frequently spend mornings searching for the Morel mushroom in this area, a highly sought after and expensive luxury for those who love mushrooms!
Just up the road from our cabins is Brown’s Lake, one of the most remote lakes with road access in the region. White and Black spruce line the lake which is home to shorebirds, waterfowl, common loons and Arctic terns between May and August. The lake is a popular spot in the summer months for water sport enthusiasts.
On an especially lucky day you might see Caribou and Moose traveling through the 3 acres surrounding the cabin.
